Wednesday morning saw over three hundred and fifty Electricians protesting inside King’s Cross Station, with shouts of “The Workers united will never be defeated”

The protest was sparked by the workers, who were fighting against a pay cut in their wages, who are being threatened to have them cut by over a third.

At the same time, there were protests in Liverpool, where over 60 sparkies were involved, and over 80 took part in Glasgow.

The electricians in London blocked off the main entrance to the building site behind the station, and marched to the other entrance, where the blocked off the entire road.

The trouble has flared because the (JIB) joint industry board are imposing to rip up the terms and conditions of the national industry agreement, and drop everyone’s wage down by 35%.

The companies and contractors involved in this are big names, such as Spie Mathew Hall, Crown House Technologies, Gratte Brothers, Bailey Building Services, and Balfour Beatty.

Direct action against their proposals is their main objective from these major building contractors.

Socialist Worker interviewed one sparky, who told them “they are in favour of direct action. We’re giving it to them. Let’s see them give the green light to industrial action”.

United union officials were applauded at the London march, as they committed to a strike ballot, in favour of defending the Joint Industry Board agreement.

Unfortunately though, some of the electricians are growing rapidly impatient, as one told Social Worker “A Ballot as soon as possible is a good thing. I think the officials don’t quite understand that ‘as soon as possible’ means now’.
